The year 2006 was quite international. Artists capturing the biggest hits of 2006 were from various different countries. Portuguese decent, Nelly Furtado had a big hit "Promiscuous" with Timbaland; Colombian Shakira had a long lasting international hit along with Wyclef Jean for "Hips Don't Lie"; Jamaican Sean Paul had two major hits, "Temperature" and "(When You Gonna) Give It Up to Me"; Caribean princess, Rihana from Barbados got people dancing with "S.O.S."; new Euro-dance sensation Cascada from Germany had a big hit with "Everytime We Touch"; and supergroup Gnarls Barkley fronted by Cee-Lo and London resident, Danger Mouse created the best night-time driving song of all time, "Crazy." And don't forget to include our artist of the year, Justin Timberlake, who hailed from Disneyland.
This says one thing. The music industry is becoming a lot more global. It's not just the Americans and the British dominating the chart (though most of them reside in one of them) anymore.
Rock continues to make a come back with strong showing from perenial artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as fairly new comers such as My Chemical Romance, who probably had the best rock album of the year, and Panic! At the Disco.
Not too related to the dance genre, but Canadian Daniel Powter controlled the Billboard chart this year, thanks to the pop-culture show, American Idol using the song at end of each shows. Weird Al Yankovic parodied Chamillionaire's hip-hop anthem, "Ridin' Dirty" to "White & Nerdy" which was a major video hit.
Last year The Game made a noticeable debut, and at end of this year, he released the album, The Doctor's Advocate, which was just as consistent and catchy as his first album, The Documentary. Another strong hip-hop album to note was Lupe Fiasco's, Food & Liquor.
Some years are filled with sad, slow, ballads but we were happy that the year 2006 had a lot of fun danceable song to keep us occupied on the dance floor (once again). |
